My hip hurts, and I dont know why. Please help?
My right hip hurts. It hurts the most in the groin area , but it feels like the whole hip hurts. If it helps it hurts the most when i start running, like right off the start line, until i get in my groove, then the pain goes away somewhat. Also when i lift my leg up toward my chest, then i put it down i hear a popping noise. It started to hurt after i hadnt run for a long time, then i ran 8 miles with leg weights on. I dont know what a stress fracture feels like, but i can run. I really need the pain to go away, because track is in full swing, and i can t run as well as i want to.

Do you think weightlifting helps distance runners?
You hip pain is very likely to be a muscle strain, probably caused by suddenly running a long distance, compounded by running with leg weights. I realize the concept of leg weights is very attractive -- more strenuous workout in the same amount of time. However, it is often a contributor of injury with very little payoff in training. In my book, no payoff is worth an injury that will sideline you.You mentioned a pain mostly in the groin area but also in the hips. Further, you mentioned a "popping" noise in your hips. All of these are classical symptoms of a hip flexor strain, as two others have suggested, and I agree that it is most likely to be the cause of your pain. Sometimes, a hip flexor strain is confused with a groin strain because of similar symptoms, but that injury is more commonly associated with sports like hockey.
I realize that track is in full swing, but you will want to rest your hip for about two or three days or until the pain goes away. You should ice the painful area for no more than 15 minutes at a time every 2 to 3 hours or so. Using anti-inflammatories will help with the pain, but I recommend against using it unless you really need it.
Full recovery depends on the person, but it can be as short as a week for a mild injury, which is about the range you are probably in. During that time, you should not push yourself. As soon as you feel pain, stop. Patience is key.
To avoid injury in the future, try some hip flexor stretches before runs. I have enclosed a link to some common stretches.
Good luck with the rest of the season.

It sounds like you may have strained some of your hip flexors. If the pain goes away(which is due to your adrenaline) than it probably isn't a muscle pull, just a strain. For strains you should ice after exercise, make sure you stretch thoroughly before and after you exercise and possibly use an ice tub if you have access to one. The only way for it to heal properly is to give it rest, but if that isn't an option, follow the steps above to help you cope with it the best.More Questions & Answers...
