Tips on how to break 5 minutes in the 1600m (mile)?

Question:Ok, so I'm an 8th grade boy doing track. Just last week, I qualified for the sectionals meet in my state, which will take place this Wednesday. The events I will be doing there are the 1600m, the 800m, and the 4x400m relay. However, the event which I want to concentrate most on is the 1600m (mile). My PR on rubber track in track spikes is almost exactly 5:00 (exact time 5:00:35). Anyone have some last minute tips for breaking the 5-minute mark?
I need to break the 5-minute mark so I can win first place in this event and edge my competitor from another league who also has around the same time.

Running the 800meter?

You need to average just under 75 secs. a lap.

I found it easiest to go something along:
74, 75, 76, 73

That puts you at 4:58. If anything, I will bet you are going out too quick. Not only does this tire you out by running hard, but it probably means a lot more jostling for posistion with other runners. Assuming that the lead pack will be close to your split time, let them get situated in the first 200 m before you make a move on them. The last lap should be a gut check, with a constintly increase in speed.

I agree with another poster who said in track it is better to race the other runners and not the clock. That is often true. however, you may be someone who races the clock better then other people. Also, you are trying to break 5, which is a specific time. I would focus on the clock for this race.

Good luck. If you keep training, you will have a very successful running career in high school if you want it.

Outdoor Running?

Just push yourself harder than you've ever before specifically on those last 10 meters and you'll break it.

How often should I replace my running shoes? I exercise about 4 hours a week.?

run faster than your oppenents..breathe

When you run should i drik alot of water or not and why?

You should start out a little faster than normal, because your body has bottled up energy for about the first 5 seconds of any race, and you will be able to use it. Also, the last 400m of a mile is important to stay strong and keep or better your overall pace for the race.

Desperate for tips...can't seem to wake up early to run?

TRAIN! i train and i have become so good!:)i would never hane thought i would get this far and fast! AND MOST IMPORTANTLY BELIEVE IN URSELF!!!!!

Im going to start running in the mornings?

Time doesn't matter if your goal is to win the race. In my 2 mile race for my high school's league championships I ran 10:08 and got 10 but at districts a guy who ran 9:57 ran a 10:08 and I would have beat him. So just run to beat the guy, not for time if that is what your goal is.

Is there a place in Arkansas that makes and delivers varsity lettermen jackets?

You'll break it without having to do anything extra. Trust me you'll be running scared and the adreneline will kick in.

Running socks?

Figure out what splits you need to hit per lap. Your coach should be able to help you with that as he/she knows what type of runner you are. Typically you'll need to hold back a tad for the first lap. The third lap is the hardest and when you will really need to push it. Your adrenaline on the last lap will get you through to the end. Write your goal lap splits on your hand. When you hear your lap splits look at your hand and see if you need to slow down (so you'll have enough to finish the race) or if you need to pick it up.

Good luck.

Is there a nation wide store that tests your foot when you run to determine the best shoe for you?

The third lap is very critical during a race believe it or not. If you run a good third lap then you should be ok for the final lap because your body will naturaly want to make you run faster that last lap. Also just give it all you got in the last 150m.
