I assume that you want to be in good enough shape to enjoy particpating in x-country and not win the state championship.Given that you cannot run one mile without stoppoing to walk you are not yet a runner. To become a runner, you must get to the point where you can run 20 to 30 minutes at an easy pace without stopping. In addition, you must be be able to repeat this workout 4 times a week. From my experience with running, it typically takes about 8 weeks for a healthy, motivated individual to go from being a non runner to being a runner.
There are many plans that you can follow. An excellent beginners plan is on Runnersworld website. Here's the link.

Note, if the above link does not work, go to Runnersworld.com and search for running 101.
Basically, you start with a combination of walking and running. The total duration of the exercise is 20 to 30 minutes. Over the course of the 8 weeks, you slowly decrease the amount of walking and increase the amount of running. Eventually, you get to the point where you run 20 minutes without walking. The most important thing is to take it slowly so you do not get injured.
The above program will get you started but you will need more running to enjoy competing. I would recommend spending another 6 to 8 weeks slowly increasing your mileage and running frequency. Ideally after 14 to16 weeks you should be able to run 5 to 6 days a week and you will able to run 40 minutes at an easy pace without walking.
So if you are serious, you should start as soon as possible and 14 weeks is a reasonable minimum amount of time to get into shape.
Im running as vp for student council. do you have any slogans that would work with the name jamie?
The sooner you begin training, the better. You have a lot to work on..when I did cross country we had to meet at 6 am and run 2 miles..and we could not stop and walk. Then there was afternoon practice..so yeah get started girl!! Good luck!if you're looking to be at least semi-competitive, I suggest 12 weeks
First start mixing walking and running, then when you feel alright to, run the entire time. Before you focus on millage, just get into shape by running or walking for a set amount of time.
Runners world has a great beginers program, and there's a bunch of good "couch to 5k" (5k being the distance of high-school XC meets) plans
Good Luck

I would say you should try jogging slower and go the same pace for the same distance. If you mix walking and running it is not good for getting in shape. Once you can jog the distance you want without stopping, then start seeing if you can do it in a shorter time each time you go. I would say start already and try jogging at least once a day. Then just go farther and faster! It takes lots of self discipline, but its worth it! Good Luck! What country-wide stores can you buy a diskus?
Just do the jog, walk until you can run the entire distance. Run until you have to walk, then walk until you can run again. You will be able to run the entire distance soon. When you can run the entire distance then you can work on running a little faster. You should train 5 to 6 days per week. Your age, weight, and current condition will determine how long it will take to get into really good shape, but you have to start, so do it now. You will improve very rapidly once you get into the running. I think within one month you will be able to run the distance everyday and look to getting better.More Questions & Answers...
