What is wrong with my knee?
During my last two runs I felt normal, but about 1 hour after, the outside of my knee hurts very badly. It hurts to walk and bend it. I'm not sure what's wrong with it. It hurts for the day and the next I'm feeling good again. Does anyone know what may be wrong?
Answers:
1. healing it and training.
run on flat surfaces for a week and a half. no hills, no anything but flat. very little turns. run straight as possible for as long as possible. to heal it, after you run, wrap it. i dont care what you rap it with, just as long as you keep your leg fully extended for as much as possible. at work or anywhere else.
you should have a sensation to move it again, and when running, you should have a feeling in that leg joint that says "im out of shape". if you dont have that feeling, you are moving it too much outside of training. if you deside to step down from training and let it heal, please do, it is amazing to, after 2 weeks of rest, be able to run without the knee pain.
if you deside to let it heal without training, keep it wrapped, and keep it straight. sometimes it took me cutting of my leg circulation to not move it (dont let it rot off or anything). there are some GREAT ways to keep in shape while letting this heal. swimming, and jump roping. jump rope without bending your knees.
2. prevention: after it heals, there is an emportant thing to do, a way to strengthen your muscles that connect from the patella, to the femur bone (again, get to know runners knee, be smart.) lie straight down on the ground, and place a curled towel underneath both legs, under your knees. your legs should be completely straight, and should be side by side. now, lift your lower legs. i exaggerate, LOWER LEGS. lift them up and down. up and down. you should feel like a whimp, especially if someone is watching, but after about 50 of them, you will feel the soreness! your ankles should only rise about 4 inches of the ground, and then they come back down.
good luck with your heeling.
Are you stretching before you run? Could you possibly just need new running shoes? if it keeps up I would see the doctor
Questions about joining track?
Well my friend ... sounds like you have herpes.Does anyone know a site where i can look up techniques for different track and field events?
could be any number of things - sprain, torn ligament, torn tendon, arthritis.the only way to know for sure is to see a doctor.
Streching actually helps results?
Sounds like some tendinitis in your ITB. See a sports medicine doctor. Some other hints:1. Don't stretch an injured tendon, you'll make it worse, rest it instead. Ice is great, 20 min. three times per day.
2. You may be able to train through it, but you should consult with a sports medicine Dr. to decide.
3. Old shoes may contribute, esp. if you are a pronator. Invest in good shoes from a reputable running store. Run no more than 500 miles or 3 months on any given pair, own at least two different pair so you can rotate.
4. If it is ITB, stretching around your hip may relieve the problem ... but be careful not to stretch by the knee until the inflammation is gone. Check out the link below.
The guy at the front of the race..who drops out after a while, has he got a pace-maker?
Without knowing more about your knee injury, it is not possible to be certain which ailment you have. You mentioned pain to the side of your knee, which is most commonly caused Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome (see Link below). If it comes and goes, and it is localized to the side of the knee and not further up, then it is probably a mild case. You should feel free to run as you normally would, but if you feel any pain at all, immediately stop. The pain is telling you that you need to let your knee stop and rest so that it can heal. Also, ice the area of pain for no more than 15 minutes at a time, 3-4 times a day. Depending on the person and severity of the injury, it should go away in a few days to a week or so. After the pain is gone, to avoid the injury in the future, try the stretch described in the link below before your runs.
Do you wear anything under compression shorts?
I've had this problem before and it could just be a sign of old age, hah.But seriously, if your knee feels tight when it hurts, try taking any normal bath towel, running it under extremely hot water and putting that on your knee with a bit of pressure. That helped me out a lot when i had it, and still does when i do have it.
It could be caused by a bit of overwork while being a bit out of shape, or it could end up being just a chronic problem. It's easy to deal with most days, but on the days when its the worst, you may just have to fight through it. Although seeing a doctor is not a bad idea.
