If you are tense, that is, you are tight in the face, arms, shoulders you will actually run slower. You must get to top speed, and realize you can not run faster so maintain what you have by being efficient. Do not make a fist, keep your arms relaxed. You are actually moving faster when you are relaxed, it takes practice to do this. Try striding on the straight, when you get to top speed feel your face, arms, shoulders, chest and back bouncing a little because they are not tense. What is everyone's favorite XC slogan?
Running relaxed is smart in any situation. If you feel better clenching your face, then that seems to suit you. My coach would always yell at me to relax my face because it in turn would set the mood for my entire body to be tense. So if it works for you, then do it but my suggestion would be to try it without a clenched face and see how you do!Can anyone reccomend a good gps watch for running. And why ?
When you sprint you want your shoulders, face and arms relaxed. You should feel your cheeks boucing. Also if you pump your arms faster your legs will move faster. Dont tense up your hands either, dont close them tightly, or hold them too straight, just slightly close them like you are carrying your iPod or something. How does Jeremy Wariner train for the 400m?

Don't tense up at all. If you do, you'll just run slower, don't tense up your jaw, or make fists, cause you're body needs all the energy and focus it can get, and if you tense, it puts energy and focus into tensing, and you run slower.More Questions & Answers...
