I personally prefer the Jeff Galloway method of putting planned walking "breaks" into your runs to lengthen your runs and build endurance.

I have been following the 10 week plan - it is basically run for 1 minute walk for two, building up reps and is designed to introduce your body to running. I have had three operations on one knee and this is the only time that I have ever been able to continue a running programme and see progression.
