Okay so im a senior in high school, i do track, and i was wondering how my times are and what more i can do ?

Yikes -- people are suggesting 15- and 20-minute 5Ks?? For a beginner?? Those would be excellent race times for a seasoned marathoner or 5K-pro! I'd say the first answer you got was the right one -- as a beginner, shoot for completing your first few 5Ks in 30 - 35 mins. Slower than that is OK too (40 mins., 45...whatever); it's all about what you can do in the moment. Don't push yourself too hard, or you could injure yourself, or just hate it and never want to run again. You'll get faster as you gradually whittle down your time during training. And have fun! Good luck!

What movie is better Prefontaine, or Without Limits??

i have run about 10 5ks and i am 13. when i started, when i was 8, i ended up running it it about 40 minutes. now, i and running it in 25- 30 minutes. about 30- 35 minutes are what you shoulkd train for. its about the average time for most beginner runners. if you cant go that fast dont. you dont want to push yoursef so far that you lose your breath right away. go at a pace that is right for you. but, you should probably train for 35 minutes

Cross country or track?

If you just started running a good goal would be about a 20 minute 5k. You should start out with low milage and gradually increase it by 10% each week until you are going on 15 mile runs on your long run days. The most important thing in the preseason is milage so don't worry about running fast. You'll get to that once the season starts.

Are Brooks shoes still good for running?

male:
beginner - about 20-21 minutes
end of season - approx. 19 minutes
good (myself) - 17 minutes
great - 16 minutes
demi-god (Max O'Donoghue-Mcdonald) - under 16 minutes

~AHHH! 15 mile runs will lead you down one path - stress fracture. You are training for a 5k not a marathon so you milage should be equal in proportion to your race, the farthest I ever ran in pre-season was 12 miles and that was only once.

What do sit ups and push ups have to do with running?

I assume you want to know a range of times for a beginner cross country runner so that you feel comfortable on the team. The reality is that you can not train for a time. A runner trains based his or her current ability. If you overreach, you run the risk of injury. Slow and steady is generally the best way. Your time is merely a reflection of your ability and training.

However, to answer your question, for high school boys, being about to run 19:00 minutes is a reasonable starting point. The top runners are under 16 minutes. For high school girls, add 2 minutes to those times. If you are in middle or junior high then times are slower. Note, it is often hard to compare times because cross country courses can vary a lot. Some courses can be much faster or slower.

The best training you can do over the summer is easy runs. Increase your mileage slowly to avoid injury. If you are already able to run 20 minutes without stopping then do this 4 times a week. Build up over 8 weeks to the point you can run 6 ot 7 days a week. Increase mileage no more than 10% per week. Slowly increase the length of one or two runs until you are comfortable running for 60 minutes at an easy pace. For more training suggestions take a look at these links at running times.

Good luck next fall.

I have a track meet tomorrow. I am nervous... any advice?

depends what age you are. for high school, id say the average time is about 25 minutes. in my opinion, unless your training to win fist place, just compete against yourself. take your best time from last season and try to cut off one fifth of the time.

Beginner Hurdler?

20-22 minutes is a reasonable first 5k time

I want to like to run!!!! I want to do track. =]?

Shoot for around 30 minutes or under; a 10 minute mile pace or less.

What does the "DC" in DCshoes stand for?

well sounds like high school cross country and a good average time in cross country is 19-20 mins, where alot of people are so about the average. Because the fast people are usually alone in the front of the pack running 16-18 and then the rest follows. The ones who do cross country for trainning and just to do something usually finish 21-23 so anything between would do it!!

I would like some coaching tips on running like a great work out plan?

My first 5k was 38 min. So was my 2nd. My third, I knocked it down to 34. I am just not a fast runner, and I'm older. Shoot for 35, but it's already been said that you don't want to push too hard, or you will get hurt.
