The main thing I like to work on with my jumpers is to get them into the right position at take-off. At take-off, they should have an inward lean (due to running on a curve) and a backward lean (because of the blocking action of the take-off foot). If you work with other jumpers, have them watch you and tell you if you are doing this. If you are in the correct position on the last step, the odds are you will have a good jump.
The other main thing is getting a good arch over the bar. Most people aren't used to arching their back and actually end up flat or arching their lower back in the air even if they are trying to arch. You need to be able to arch your upper back and hold that position until your most of your torso clears the bar. Your lower back will arch also, but the arch should start from your upper back. Practice holding this position just laying down on the ground and sticking your chest up and shoulders down and back as hard as you can.
Whats a way to train the cardiovascular in shape?
A basic h.j. lesson. Your approach needs to be in 3 segments. Start off slow, then go faster, and the last 1/3 should be fastest. Plant your take off foot so that it points toward the far standard. You should take off about your arms length away from the bar. Drive your knee and arm (or arms) directly up. Turn in the air so your shoulders are parallel to the bar. Jump up,not toward the bar. Arch your back, with your head back. When your center of gravity passes over the bar, look down toward your belly button, put your chin down on your chest. This will bring your middle down and your legs and feet up so you will not hit the bar with your legs or feet. You are converting horizontal speed to vertical speed. You need to carry the speed you can control. Most people take between 9 and 12 steps in their approach. The most important thing is to jump up and not back into the pit.Where I can find track and field spikes for a right take-off foot high jumper in New York City?
