Middle School Track, 1600?


Question:I run the 1600 and 800 on my school track team, (middle school). My PR for the 1600 is about 5mins 40sec, and divisionals is about 5mins 30sec. I try to run everyday..
I have about a week (maybe more) to shave off 10 seconds..any suggestions?

I have to tell you that shaving off ten seconds in a week is rare & near impossible.
My best is 5:39 & I'm trying to get my best too...plus a school record (which is currently 5:37), so I'm almost in the same boat. Here's what my coach told me:
Try changing your strategy. I don't know what your current one is, but which is usually your slowest lap? If it's not your first one or two, try to go a little slower on your first lap to save more energy for the end. My strategy is usually to go out really hard & do a 1:17 on the first lap then use whatever I have left on the last few. But my coach is having me run a 1:23 on the first two laps so I can speed up even more on the rest of the race.
Try it. IDK if it'll work for you, but it's helped me.

How long does it take to get in good shape for cross country?

run with weights around your ankle during 5 of the 7 days. Run without the weights once during the middle of the week and on the last day before your next meet. i suggest 3 or 5 lbs?
