What are some of the best techniques to use when training for an Ironman?

Unless you are really slow, you probably need more strength work than speed work. Plyometrics and the like will help you express whatever strength you have quickly, but if you don't have any strength to express, you won't see big improvements.

If you are playing basketball regularly, then that is all the "speed" work you need. You just need to focus on strength. Do a heavy squat or deadlift variation twice a week. If you aren't used to doing them, start out light until you get the form down, and then go heavy.

Sprints...run to the end of your street as fast as you can. Turn around and walk back, then run to the end of your steet as fast as you can again...repeat this pattern several times. After a couple of weeks of this, increase the distance involved. Good luck.

Lift weights, do total body work not just lower body. Do plyometrics to develop explosive muscles. Work on short sprints. You will need to condition yourself to running so you will have the base to last a game, but your main intent is speed. The plyos will help you be faster, jump higher, and be quicker. Be sure to work your abs, and the core muscles so you will not be injury prone.

I play netball and i have a similar problem. To improve my speed strength i skip for 10 minutes everyday. I also do sprints for the length of a netball/basketball court. Other than just sprinting you can do suicide sprints using the transverse lines.

Ok I run track, and here are some helpful tips. Do speed drills, like quick feet, high knees, butt kicks, and power skips. Also squatting helps you jump higher and sprint faster. Also practice suicides. Although they suck, they make u faster. Trust me.

Sprints, i hate to do this but squats help build up leg strength, running stairs, running with ankle weights.trying running line touches (it helps with your acceleration) run 10 yards and back to the start, 20 yards and back to the start and so on until u get 50 yards and back, alot times just to get quicker all u got to do is to improve your running form- bring your feet up- don't drag them-don't run with closed hands,etc etc and stretching helps out also

It was long distances like 8-10 miles to stretch the body out completely then realign with power runs which are shorter distances like 1 mile or 3 miles. You pick up speed in the interm of timing.You can also uphill your incline when you use the treadmill or ellipitcal to increase your endurance then bike 1/2 to 45 minutes for agility...

Runners (basketball or other) are by body structure either sprinters or distance (duration) types. You can't change the fundamentals of this. Yet, you can train to be at the top of your class. Beyond that, if you are in the "slower" class, work on your moves and deception, ball handling, etc., to off set any lack in speed and become the playmaker that really is your goal.

Our running speed, quickness and acceleration transers over to another sport. For example, if you like sprinting and long distance running, you can go and use these strategies as a work out for basketball. Running up and down the steps at the gymnasium is another good skill.

What is ultra running?

Here are couple of speed and agility drills practiced on the basketball court.

Stand at one sideline, accelerate to run across the court as fast as possible, and decelerate to stop at the other sideline. Turn around, and repeat, going the other way. Do at least five reps (ten crossings), rest and catch your breath, then do another five. Work your way up, adding reps every week, until you can keep this up for an hour or more without shortness of breath.

There are also special 45 degree ramps that you can place ten meters apart, and run back and forth between them as fast as you can. The object is to plant a foot on the ramp and pivot, changing direction instantly. Do this at least every day, or several times a day, getting faster and faster. Be careful not to injure an ankle or knee, and if you do, stop, see a doctor, and don't resume this drill until you get medical approval.

There are also a variety of strength training drills, but I do not know of any that is particularly good for basketball.

One thing that I do which helps me out a lot in both areas is to run on a treadmill while holding a couple weights(Start small and work your way up for both the weights and speed of the treadmill) and I also like to apply this technique to step exercises.

I also like applying the same Principal to several other types or exercises since the weights make it feel as if there is in extra pull of gravity which helps with bone/muscle density and overall running speed.
