Why did I get leg cramps in my calves while running today?

I've been running pretty regularly lately, but for some reason, today my calf muscles knotted up several times while I was running. I did my usual pre-run stretches and everything and I don't remember that ever happening to me. Do you know why it happened and how I can prevent it from happening in one of my future runs?

Muscles use lactic acid to contract. If you are partaking of too many dairy or raw sugar products, you may have too much lactic acid remaining in your muscles, causing it to contract.
Avoid dairy products and sugary snacks like cookies w/ sugar sprinkles or cake with heavy frosting. Anything that relies on sugar for taste or to make it palatable.

Runners: I need some help?

Try stretching and warming up a little longer, if you do 10min now then bump it up to 20min. Its never good to rush into working out without warming up. Treat your body like your car, once you turn it on let it warm up then take it slow and speed up once you are ready.

Should i join track?

you jog one lap for warm up (no matter what kind of workout youre doing: weight lifting, running, etc) because if you dont your muscles arent warm enough to help you stretch. after you stretch you run, then after you run you stretch again to keep it from being prevented. if it still hurts you probably pulled a muscle which should be treated with an ice pack after running, and if its an hour or more after running, use a heat pack.

feel better =)

Could be that you aren't hydrated enough especially if the temperature is high. Many people that have a circulation problem encounter cramping as well but on a more consistant basis. Drink plenty of fluids prior to and after running or exercising.

Possiblities:

* If you were in very cool area and started running before your body temperture adjusted.
* If you were wearing high heeled shoes all day and your calves over stretched.

Is running on a manual treadmill better than running on normal ground?

the reason you got a cramp is because you didn't have enough fluids in your body so your mussels tightened.so run with a water bottle or a Gatorade because Gatorade has salt and salt retains water.

The weather is warming up. Make sure you drink a lot throughout the day. And drink before, during, and after practice. That will help keep with this problem.

Is boiled eggs good tonight for my track meet tomorrow?

cramps are usually from dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water. If you are conditioned to run and this has not happened before I doubt that it is from lack of conditioning. Drink before you are thirsty. You become dehydrated before you know it especially in humid weather. Sometimes you can have a lack of potassium in hot weather. Take a supplement, a banana does not have enough to help you.

What's a good time for the 55 meter hurdles? for the 110 meter?

did you stetch? the most IMPORTANT thing before running or any sport is to stretch because you could be seriously injured. maybe you were more stretched out on the other times then this time? drinking too much water can cause cramps but drinking too little can also cause them.
