I am starting a new running program?

Question:I am starting a new running program, based on this article. I'm not trying to lose weight, just get in better shape.

http://www.wikihow.com/begin-running...

I read on this site that it is important to stretch before starting to run. but i also read that it is important to warm up before stretching. does that mean that exercise is required before i stretch before i exercise? if that is what that means, is walking the 4 1/2 blocks to the gym sufficient? Also, what stretches should i do? please give me instructions.

also, what are some tips to make sure i stick to this? i'm not trying to lose weight.

Before excercise stretching should be more active stretching of the muscles. Traditional static stretching out of a muscle should be saved for post excercise, if you try to staticly stretch your muscles before they're warmed you could do more damage than good.

Gentle running/ or walking would do the trick. Also eliptical trainers are quite good. The key is to loosen the tight muscles rather than stratching them, if you think of it like that it can be easier to work out what your meant to do. Just gently try and get them moving, think of your muscles as an old diesel engine, get them warmed up, then lightly ticking over, then start going proper.

Good luck with your program, I know from when I started all the advice out there of what you shuld/shouldn't do can be confusing. Just do what sounds - and more improtantly feels - right and you should be fine.

Prevent chafing on long runs?

Jog a little to warm up your muscles before stretching. As long as your muscles are warm and you build up a light sweat, you are warmed up.

Stretch out anything that is tight. Hamstrings, quads, calves, groin, IT band, shoulders are a good start.

The walk to the gym would be a good warmup for your muscles. Good luck in your program. One of the best ways to stay motivated is enter a race.

The important factor is to start easy, stay motivated, it will take a while to get in shape therefore be patient and persistent, must important have fun, common sense will prevent injury which will set you back. Do not follow the saying "if it hurts is working" if it hurts rest, recovery is a very important factor in training. Read up, don't just listen to so called experts. I recommend the Lore of Running: Books: Timothy D. Noakes by Timothy D. Noakes.
Keep hydrated, socialize. At first stretching should be very cautious. Running easy a little will subtitute for streatching, as you get into heavier workouts streaching will be more important to prevent injury. I stretch before running softly, and then a half hour or so after heavy workouts. Cheers!
