Freshman mid-distance runner with some questions.?

There are many ways of working out your legs. The exercise you described, the intervals of fast pace runs with a short rest period in between, is called a 'tempo run'. This is an excellent method of improving your pace so that you run faster. It is certainly a great workout.

Another approach is to increase your endurance by running longer distances. In this case, your main goal it to reach a certain distance, so you often run at an easy pace. You develop a training schedule for yourself where you slowly increase the distance. There are numerous training schedules online for increasing distances. Some great ones are at the link below.

Good luck on your training.
