Answers:
A classmate of mine in high school got a scholarship to a NAIA school for track. He was consistently under 2 minutes in the 800, but never could quite crack 4:30 in the mile.
Scholarships are available for the asking. Talk with your counselor at school about financial aid information. Mine gave me brillant information - "Hey, you're pretty smart. You should go to college." Make him or her work. I was a valedictorian, yet the counselor kept trying to push the local junior college; he finally broke down and gave me some real information. I went to Illinois for free on financial aid and a private scholarship. The key place to start is by filling out the financial aid paperwork, a standard form almost every university uses. Then have the information sent to whatever universities and colleges you apply to. They will do the computation for you and determine how much aid they will be able to provide you.
On top of that, there are lots of private scholarships available. Your local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and other clubs will often have scholarships, ranging from $200 to $1000. Local businesses will often sponsor scholarships. If your parents work for a major corporation, you may qualify for some scholarship from their work. If a parent is a veteran, you might qualify for some type of aid. But you need to ask, because these opportunities don't just come looking for you.
