Winning the 400m?
Well, I need to win the 400. How do I do that. Do I run the first 100m, then stride, then sprint. Or do I run backwards doing the hokey pokey? (Just kidding about the hokey pokey thing.)

The 400 is a sprint, not a sprint, stride, sprint. Come out and get to top speed, in about 40 to 60 meters. Now you are running at your top speed for this race, do not try to run faster. When you come off the curve, relax, keep your stride pattern and arms moving, do not try to run faster. Think about getting a huge beach ball rolling, it takes effort to get it moving, but once it is then it doesn't take much to keep it going, that is similar to running fast without straining to run fast. When you enter the second curve you must put out more effort to maintain your speed on the curve than what you did on the straight. When you come off the second curve you are going as fast as you can so do not try to run faster. Relax, get your hands up so that you can see them and drive them back. This action will keep your stride pattern and turn over rate going so you do not shorten your stride. Run in a straight line, look beyond the finish line and run to that point. If someone is ahead of you do not try to run harder to catch them it will cause you to tighten up and slow down. Just keep up your stride and turn over rate and they will come back to you. It is important that you stay relaxed do not tighten up your hands, arms, shoulders, back, or face. You should come through the first 200 about 2 seconds slower than your 200 race time, you may have a 2 second slow down in the second 200 from the first 200, which will give you an idea about your race potential. Is there a limit just how fast a can human run a mile?

As in all sprints the first 7 steps are critical and don't change at any level. Use blocks- period, come out low and accelerate to full speed. then the race and athlete determine the next phase.
