Be honest , in a race would you rather be a Tortoise or a Hair ?
First learn how to walk efficiently, and silently. The point is to move over the distance in minimum time. Forward motion not up and down movement. If you think of your legs as the wheel of a unicycle and gravity pulling you forward as you try to maintain from falling on your face you will tend to speed up. Think of caressing the road rather than slapping it with your feet. Efficient contact with the road is apparent when the steps are very silent. Your stride should be comfortable, and you should control the repetition of your steps as you experiment with with shortening and lengthening your stride. Do workouts on a track or a street that has no traffic and it is safe, a closed-end street is a good choice. Running on a level lawn or sports field is a good choice. Work on your breathing, try to breathe through your nose, inhaling and exhaling over several steps of your gait. Be relax, and most important enjoy yourself as you see the slow improvement over the days, rather than trying to do to much on the same day. This will prevent you from injury. You should not feel any pain in your feet, if so, you are trying to hard and progress is been hindered. Have fun, run with a partner.needs the big march maybe .

How do I get back into running? Maybe a marathon?
Move your legs up and down really really fast. Remember, it goes right, left, right, left, right, left. Repeat as necessary.Stand up tall, let your shoulders sag, do not tighten up and pull them up around your ears. Keep your elbows at 90 degrees, swing the arms straight front to back, not across your body. Keep your foot dorsiflexed, that is have your toe pulled up toward your knee, not pointed down. The foot should strike the ground in a pawing motion coming back at the speed you are moving forward, just slightly ahead of your center of gravity, do not lengthen your stride by planting the foot out in front of you this will slow you down. Your stride is lengthened behind you not in front of you. Running is a pushing motion, not a pulling motion. The key to running fast is to be able to relax so that you do not clinch your fists, tighten up your arms, shoulders, back, chest, and rear end. You should feel your face and chest muscles bouncing a little as you run. Remember that once you are at top speed you can not run faster and trying to run faster only slows you down.
Proper posture is always a must. In the Quarter Mile, if I'm not mistaken, you have to stay in your lane so you can't take the easy way for a better time and cut in. Just keep your shoulders loose, back straight, and look forward. You're gonna run whichever way you're looking. That's why you never look behind you to see if someone is catching you, because you'll slow down.
Make believe you're running on a tightrope. Make sure that your legs are going in FRONT of you, not on the sides of you. I had that problem for 2 years and once I fixed it my 800 time dropped by 11 seconds. (2:14-2:03)
And always remember to thrust your upper body forward RIGHT BEFORE the finish line to cut that .2 seconds off your time. It could easily determine a win or loss.
