H*ll yes, spikes are for sprinting. Practice without them until a couple of days before. Practice on form with coming off the starting line too. You can get some good shoes with screw ins on the bottom for the spikes that you are most comfortible with. The spikes prevent lost energy time and control from slippage in a tournament.Cross country running builds endurance but not necessarily speed. What is a good speed training program?
Base Mileage. By that I mean run longer at slower paces. Try starting out with one or two miles. If your a sprinter one or two miles should be good enough. Work on running these enough to where you are comfortable, then try running them faster.Spikes, are you kidding? How can you be a sprinter and not have spikes? Look at your running shoes and if they don't have spikes coming out of the bottom i want you to do two things. First smack yourself and then go buy some spikes. If you dont know what they are, go to a shoe store and ask.
What are your best training tips for a sprint triathlon?
you can also run hills, that will also help you improve your enduranceWill running reduce thigh muscle mass?
The only way you increase your endurance is to run distance over a period of time. Running 1 mile at a time is a good way to start. Don't try to keep up with the distance runners on your team - they will smoke you! (Trust me, I've tried this before). Go at your own pace and gradually build yourself up to clipping along at a good pace.Spikes. Those are special running shoes that have actual spikes on the bottoms (that screw in with a special key). They help you with traction as you sprint. If you have ever heard someone say that really fast sprinters run on the balls of their feet, they are correct. The less of your foot that you plat, the less effort your legs and body will use to pick the foot off the ground and propel you forward. SO, when you see spikes, you will notice that they are only on the front portion of the shoe.
Also note that each school has different rules regarding spike length. You want to ask your track coach which is best for you...buying really long ones is a bad idea, yet you want to get something that's long enough to dig into the track. Once you know how long the spikes need to be, buy a few sets of them. They wear out easily and need to be replaced often for them to have their full effect.
One last thing - you do not want to practice in them! As I mentioned before, the spikes themselves wear out easily. The shoe itself does not have the support or durability you would need during a practice workout.
Good luck.
