What are good ways to get in shape for track?

This will be my third year running track; but I took last year off, so I am quote a bit our of shape. Track season starts in three weeks and I need to start getting ready. I know I should have started earlier, but what are some good ways to get back into shape?

It depends on what event you do. But like the people who answered already said--cardio work. After going for runs my teammates and I always do "strides" for about 100 meters--that means, at the end of your run, find a nice open field or just go up and down your driveway and do about 4-6 strides down the field. They don't have to be "all out," just practicing good form and getting yourself used to running fast and finishing fast. If you're a distance runner maybe your goal in the next 3 weeks should be to get your mileage up, by starting with some shorter runs, ending with strides and stretching, and then gradually increasing (I believe there is a 10% rule that states to not increase your mileage by more than 10% each week.) You don't have to go out and run 10 miles for you first run this week if you're trying to get in shape for distance. But after all that may not even be important to you if you're not training for distance running. A good place to start it all would be to go to: www.runnersworld.com , a great website for runners with tips on training and nutritition. I think they even have example of good strength-building exercises and stretches too! :)
