Running and sore outer foot?
Question:my friend recently hurt her foot while running (7-10K). the outer edge of her foot has been really sore for over a week now. what could this be? And what do you think caused this? do you thnk that changing shoes should make a difference? What can she do to alleviate the pain?
we're training for a half marathon so having a sore foot is something she really doesn't need right now!

Why is it that runners run in the track and field in counter-clock wise?
I would try a change in footwear first. In many cases, the pronation (stride) of the foot can move either too far outside (supination) or inside (overpronation). Sounds like the foot is supinating. You can get a great pair of running shoes anywhere from $85 on up. I would highly suggest these running shoes for your friend.
I have sold these at my store for years and get great feedback on them.
Brooks Radius- $85
Asics Nimbus-$120
Nike Max Moto-$85
Adidas Supernova Cushion-$90
I would also suggest using the "Shoe Advisor" at www.brooksrunning.com
For current pain, soak in warm water, take pain releiver, massage.
Consider sock options:
Thorlo offers great padding and cushion.
Wrightsocks are wonderful for blister protection and moisture management.
Aftermarket footbeds (insoles) will protect also. Try Spenco Polysorb.
Hope this helps!
It sounds like a shoe problem to me. I would go to a specialty running store and have her foot properly fitted with another shoe. I've had similar pains while running, and it was because of the shoe.
Breathing Exercises to Boost Lung Capactity?
She should probably start by taking several days off from running and icing the injured area - 20 minutes or so 3 or 4 times a day. The layoff from running won't kill her fitness and may be all she needs. Non impact activity would be an o.k. substitute during this period. If it feels better after a few days she should return to her prior level of running over a week or two - don't hop back in with a hard 10-miler as the first workout. Take it easy at first. If she really feels the need to be active. If it doesn't improve after a rest she should see her doctor. It could be a stress fracture or something else, but only a trained medical professional will be able to diagnose it.
I need the best pair of athletic shoes possible!! Any ideas?
It' probably not the shoe but the gait. It sounds like you're not running correctly. We always tell our cadets to run "heel, toe." During Cadet Challenge, our physical tests, they have to run one-mile. I always explain to them that this will help prevent shin splints and sore-footedness. Half of them don't listen because they're teenagers, but they learn after that. Anyways, if you run heel toe, your weight gets distributed evenly. Picture a boat with a rounded bottom rocking on the waves and make your foot emulate that. What is the average 40 yard dash for a 16 year old?
Could be Plantar fasciitis. I've had mine flair up on and off for the past couple months. Started with a run and not enough arch support in a pair of shoes with ice studs.Rather than regurgitate the article here's the link.
I do 10K everyday. My tendon swells and tightens up. I "cured" the pain by shifting my arch supports a few millimeters closer to the toe box, then taping it in place. Make sure to do that to both the running shoes and everyday shoes. It'll help relieve the pressure and still give support.
BTW, I've never iced or rested the foot. Probably not a good idea -- I just keep plugging up and down the trails.
This site also provides some exercises -- they REALLY help.
Good luck!
