Why do runners hit street signs?

Sometimes when you are driving along you see people running and they just randomly hit the stop signs or whatever (with their hands) and make this loud noise. I am actually a street-sign-hitting-runner! (as are most of the people i run with.) We just don't know why we do it...

What website could i find facts about running?

Boredom, and the need for something spontaneous and exciting. As you are running, you are in a constant, repetitive pattern of motions, and you see the sign as a distraction, something to stir up attention not only for yourself, but for others. The big red sign is in a way telling you "hit me" "hit me" and, naturally, you do.

How much training do I have to do for a marathon if I can already do a 10k? Haven't ran past 10k yet.?

I can't speak for everyone - we all have our own reasons - but I tend to measure the start and finish of my running routes by landmarks like signs, telephone poles, etc. Touching the landmark lets me know I've covered the distance and I am done - kind of like a swimmer hitting the wall of the pool at the end of a race. I don't hit the signs or make a loud noise though. Just make enough contact to let me know I've hit my marker.

In training?

i find myself and other teammates hitting signs because its just something other to do plus it lets yourself know that youre accomplishing something. also you just have to brag to the people behind you that you made it there first with a big CLANG! :]

It's just because we're runners...who are crazy. There's no real reason for it, we just get bored...after all, no matter how much you love running, it can get tedious after awhile, and anything to spice it up is a good thing.

Should I join my school's track team?

I dont know... people are stupid. I ran in college and this geek would also pull in peoples mirrors on their cars... WELL.. ... he did that one day but didnt see the guy in the car, who got out and proceded to kick him in his a$$cheeks and he took off running. Its just plain rude.

Running can be boring so to have some fun you hit the signs and it gives you a little thrill that maybe some one saw you and you might get in trouble.

I have a track meet tomorrow. I am nervous... any advice?

yeah most runners do this!
my whole cross country team will run by a stop sign and just hit it as they run by. it's probably because it gives you something to do other than concentrating on how far you have to run. Most people just do it out of boredom
