How do you make patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner's knee) go away?
Its been bothering me for about a month and at this point i have completely stopped running. It seems to hurt when i do anything, even bike and walk. It also hurts when i do the strengthening exercises that are suppose to make it better. i've never had any injuries before from running and i've been running for ten years. Is there anything else i can do to make it fo away I can't stand not being able to run :(

Safe Places To Walk or Run Around Los Angeles?
PFS is caused by improper tracking of the patella (knee cap) into the femoral groove. This causes stress to the soft tissue causing pain and possibly other problems. You should seek an athletic trainers help or see a sports medicine doctor if it really persists. What can be done is an examination of your running mechanics to determine if there is something that can be done with your shoes or possibly professionally made orthotics. They can also give you stretches and exercises that may help in the long run.
Some basic exercises and stretches can include stretching your hamstrings and groin, doing 1/4 squats to improve the strength of your VMO to improve tracking. It may be caused by IT band tightness and there are many stretches for that as well. It usually is best to talk with a professional if the basics aren't working. Good luck.
Running, of course!
You're an experienced runner. Do you know what caused the injury? Something that you are doing now could be aggravating it.
If you aren't seeing any relief after a month of not running, see a sports medicine doctor. She will tell you how to care for it and when you can start running again.
Make sure you see a sports medicine doctor. I didn't when I had knee problems (inflammed ligaments due to bad shoes) and the doctor to me to stop running...period. The SM MD told me to get better shoes and improve my form.
