What is a heat in track and field?
I always hear my coach talking about heats. I asked my friend about it, and she was VERY vague.
Answers:
Since there are limited lanes in track and field races (8),
runners will need to be separated into different heats.
Say for example, there are 24 people and 8 lanes.
There will be 3 different heats.
Heats are basically divisions of runners.
Heats can also divide runners into whatever number is necessary, such as 4 runners per heat...
But in track meets there are usually 8 runners per heat.
That's really it, there's nothing more to it.
Good luck in track!

In track, some of the shorter distance races are broken down into multiple races, called "heats". The winenrs of these "heats" then face off in the finals (like the Olympics 100m). Hope that helped.- Mike

preliminary races of an event when there are more than 8 people signed up for an event(8 lane on a track). R.G 100M there are 16 people signed up. there will be 2 heats of 8 people and to make the finals it would be top 2 in each race then the next 4 fastest times of the losers,
or winner and next 2 fastest times(3 from heat 1 & 2-=6) of each heat and next 2 fastest times of the rest.=8
