When timing a mile run time, is the tredmil as accurate as the track?
Answers:
A treadmill doesn't provide the same conditions on your body as it does when you run outside. One major factor is the weather, running on the treadmill at home should yield perfect temperature for running. Running outside may be much cooler or hotter. Also, when you run on a treadmill, your body is essentially staying in the same position, not moving forward. The treadmill surface slides to accompany your feet, and thus puts less strain on your feet than if you were running outside, when the ground does nothing to help you.
When you run on a treadmill, often times is it set to move at a certain speed, and you try and keep up. In actual running, your speed can vary greatly, and the ground doesn't continue pulling you along when you become fatigued.
The track is also different in the aspect that its not run in a linear fashion. You run around in an oval. Though the slight turns usually dont affect mile times, over time you may find that your body is slightly stronger on the left side because that's the direction you lean in around the curves.
A treadmill usually gives a pretty good estimate of your running ability (I find it varies about 30seconds), but try running outside sometimes, and not necessarily on the track. Enjoy the fresh air!
No, differences in resistence and air conditions would affect the times.
Where is the best place to buy running shoes in the Pittsburgh area?
If the treadmill is set to 1% incline then a treadmill mile time is very close. My experience is that gym treadmills are within +- 5 sec/mile. You can decide if this is accurate enough for your purposes. The treadmill requires an incline to make up for the lack of air resistance outside. The amount of incline varies with speed. At slow to medium speeds 1% is enough. At higer speeds, such as 10 mph, more incline is needed.
The treadmill mile accuracy also depends on how well the treadmill is calibrated. I have read that treadmills are accurate to 2 to 3%. My experience running on professional gym treadmills is that they are at least this accurate or better. When using a heart rate monitor, my heart rate at the same pace is very close whether running on a treadmill or running on a track. The heart rate variations I do see seem related to temperature.

absoulutely not. the tredmil they set a pace for you, on the track you set a pace for yourself. on the track you do all the work while on the other hand on the tredmill it does all the work for youWhat does it mean if the outside of my leg hurts when i run?
I don't think so, running outside is alot diffferent than running on a tredmil inside with air conditioner.More Questions & Answers...
