Track//need help to improve??

I recently tried out for the track team and made it. I'm a long distance runner I'm reaaaallly slow compared to the others. I especially need help with endurance and spinting at the end. and of course, the mental part of running. any tips? thanks! :]]

I am going to join track and want to run the mile what would be a really good time good enough to win regional

You need to train, train, train.

It doesn't hurt to run a little extra on your own on the weekends when your team doesn't have practice. It helped me immensely. You need to be self-motivated because no one is going to run for you. Take races and meets as a step by step process. Try to improve in each time you run.

I started out my high school career running 800's in 2:26. Not very good at all. I ran 40 miles a week in all with my own workouts. Usually, I did a lot of track workouts with my team, but by myself I would go on long runs at a decent, hard pace to get me going. I ended up running a 1:56 my senior year. Hard work pays off.

But, seriously, it depends on what event you run. Milers and Two-Milers need a lot more distance work. Half milers need speed and endurance. Don't be afraid to ask your coach about ideas and tell him/her the goals you want to achieve in track. Do you just want to run to be in the best shape you can, or do you want to be competitive and enjoy the sport to be the best runner you can be? Your training and motivation depends on how good you want to be.

At the end, just remember you'll be done shortly, and when people start to pass you, just remember all of those times you were tired and worked hard in your practice and training and bring it on home for the end of your races. I had the same problem when I started and there's really no way to fix it besides ask yourself if you're going to let the person who just passed you beat you. Trust me, they don't feel badly for passing you, so just keep that in mind.

Is Ultrmarathon guy Dean Karnazes just a genetic freak, or can anyone run 200 miles?

i run track and personally what i found out was what ever you run, run twice as far for endurance. for speed train with sprinters
ex.whatever workout they do do the same such as 10 laps of stairs, sprint the sides and jog the ends...

basically do a sprinters workout every other day and a distance runners workout every other day so you work different muscles and allow them to rest

Run run run run run..?

When you do the workouts the coach gives you with your heart into it, you will get better. That's what the coach is there for. Trust your coach to modify your workouts and help you with your weaknesses.

What is a good 3200m time for me?

Don't shy away from the speed training. I would recommend lots and lots of 200 meter sprints. Run them hard! You'll build up leg strength and stamina. My typical workout when I was an 800 meter runner was a 5 mile run followed by fifteen 200 meter sprints. You'll likely have to build up to that many sprints gradually or you'll suffer from the dreaded shin-splints. Start off with maybe four and then add a couple at a time as you feel it appropriate. As for the mental part, proper fitness will solve that by itself.

What is good form when running (sprinting and long distance)?

Emily,

Congrats on making the team. Don't worry if you're not as fast as you'd like to be. With practice and hard work, you'll keep getting faster. Here's what I would do:

1. Start running 2-3 times a week (slow distance 2-3 miles). You can work up to 3-4 miles during the season.
2. Once a week, go to the track and time yourself in the 800m (start off doing 2 laps as a warm-up and finish with a 2-lap cool-down). The next week do two 800m intervals...the next week do three...work up to 5.
3. If you get bored with the intervals, find a nice hill (200m-400m) and do some hill sprints...these are good at building leg strength.
4. Make sure you take 2-3 days a week off from running...your legs will get stronger when you rest.

If you keep at it, you'll really see some improvement in your times and speed. Be patient...you'll get to where you want to be!
