you shouldn't, I had someone on my team do that, he got pulled out of the race, and then kicked off of the teamI would advise not to carry anything when you are running.
When you carry something in your hand, you tend to shorten the swing of that arm. When you shorten the the swing of one arm, you shorten the stride of the leg on the other side. It's like running with a short leg.
You also tend to tense up all the muscles from you hand all the way up through your neck on that side. Not good.
Leave the phone in the car. Who is that important that they can't wait until you are done to talk to you?
