MO,Side stitches are caused by trapped air. What you need to try is this. When you feel them start to come on breath out through your mouth with your lips pinched like your about to blow into a trumpet. Do this until the pain goes away. What this does is put a little restraint on the air being exhaled and will push the trap air away from the diaphragm. Now one of two thing will happen with this trapped air. You will either burp or fart. Either way the pain will go away.
Best of luck this works for 90% of my runners

Eating bananas or things with potassium help. Drinking the right amount of water prior to and after you run and simply breathing in and out with your hands on your head. Don't slouch or bend down.Good enough to run in college?
I have read in Runner's World that doing leg lifts helps to prevent stitches. Strengthening your abs keeps stitches from happening. Lie on your back with your arms on the ground by your side. Keep your legs as straight as possible, and lift them to a 45 degree angle. Start with just a few, and then work your way up to more and more. What is the normal track record for High School 100m?
For a side stitch, I continue running (though at a slower pace) and push (almost a light massage) on the affected area while exhaling. During the inhale, I don't push on the stitch. This usually works out the stitch after doing this for 5 minutes. This was an old trick from my cross country coach and it has consistently worked for me for years. To prevent stitches, there are many options, including eating potassium (bananas), salt tablets, electrolytes, etc.
