What are your best training tips for a sprint triathlon?
My friend and I are just beginning to train for our first sprint triathlon. Any tips or suggestions?

What track event do they have in middle school??
Wow, Where to start?Let’s see:
Practice transitions
Do bricks – Bike for about 20 miles, practice your transition to run and run for 1 to 2 miles
Make sure you bike is in working order
Learn the rules! Stay to the right, don’t draft on the bike
Learn how to fix a flat :)
Get some good running shoes
Look up some training plans at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/ar... or www.active.com
Check out www.slowtwitch.com and go to the forums for lots of info.
Try to set up a schedule where you take one day per week off.
For instance, Monday off, Tuesday Swim (1000-1500m) and Bike 10-15miles, Wednesday Run 3-5 miles, Thursday Swim (1000-1500m) and bike 10-15 miles, Friday Run 3-5 miles, Saturday – long bike (25 miles) – or Brick 20 mile bike, 2 mile run, Sunday Long run 6 miles.
Since you are just beginning your training you don’t really need to do this volume but if you can get up to this volume several weeks before the race you won’t have any problems with the race.
This is a very generalized training schedule, I would really recommend going on the web and finding a training plan.
You can substitute the short bikes for a spin class, but you really need to get out on the road for the long bike.
Please email if you have specific questions, I’ll be happy to try and answer them or point you in the right direction
Rob - what did I forget?
Is a 4:50 mile good for a high school freshman?
add distance to the run every day until you reach the length of the run. and then don't run @ all the day before the runMe & my friend are doing the same thing next May! I'm a runner so I run far more than swim/bike but I think the best thing to do is to do an equal amount of each, unless you're weak at 1 & need to improve it.
If your swimming will be in a lake-practice breathing on your lengths- all breaths on one side, then all breaths on the other for the next length, then do alternate breathing on the 3rd. Then if there is a strong tide during the race you won't feel that you have to breathe facing the current & end up swallowing water!
What mile time would it take to get a track scholarship to a university like texas, unc or maryland?
1. Swimming is 90% skill and 10% endurance. You can't structure your train for swimming the same way as you train for running or cycling.2. You are better off riding a $50 road bike from a garage sale than a $3000 mountain bike. If you do decide to ride a mountain bike (which is perfectly acceptable) then put slick tires on it.
3. Practice biking and running without socks.
4. Do Brick Workouts (Bike and then Run)
5. Practice swimming in open water.
6. Learn the definition of "Drafting". Its illegal on the bike (but not on the swim)
7. Focus the most time on your weakest sport.
8. Find out what the water temperature will be ahead of time, and whether wetsuits are allowed in the race. A wetsuit will make you swim faster, especially if you aren't a great swimmer to begin with.
9. Buy a book. "Your First Triathlon" by Joe Friel is a popular choice. http://www.amazon.com/dp/1931382859...
10. Have fun!
How much do spikes help your sprinting times?
Practice your transitions between event, thats where most people lose time. If you wear a wetsuit for swim then spray your body with Pam, it will make it faster to take off for bike.Swim in lots of open water. Practice your stroke and breathing.
Make sure your bike is set and ready for the race, nothing suck more then equipment failure during a race.
Do a lot of brick training, going from bike to run, and take as little pause as necessary in between. You use different muscles for each and need to keep all of them prepared. Get off your bike ans start walking into transition to you run.
Have a well-preped crew if allowed. Most important have fun and finish at all costs.
Can ia runner lose his fitness after a month?
Merrily, you summed it up well.I'll give you my vote.
Another thing to check out is if there are any tri clubs in your area. Sometimes they can be relatively cheap and others can be expensive. But training in a group environment is a great way to learn the basics of proper form, transitions, tricks (speed laces, taping GU to your frame, fueling, etc). When training in groups there are a lot of people that have already done Tris and you can listen and ask a lot of questions. Also, magazines and books are very beneficial too.
One more thing... Buy aerobars! This will reduce your bike split significantly.
Good Luck! You'll feel great after you complete your 1st tri and will be hooked.
