Rest is a MUST. You will do more damage than good continuing to run on an irritated IT band. In addition to rest, there are specific stretches and exercises that need to be done to help you strengthen and stretch your IT band. They are difficult to explain so referring the Runner's World or Running Times is your best bet. Photos of the stretches and exercises will keep you from getting injured even more.
