SHin splints? calcium build? motrin?

Ok so for the past 5 days i have taken a motrin before track so i could be okay at practice and not feel it at the meet, but today i went running for like 200 meters and when i stopped this one point in both my inner calves were killing me as well as my ankles. I Heard something about the repeated hitting of your foot to the ground increases calcium build which you can break off with pressure? is this true? spring break practice is going to be hell and i dont want to take motrin anymore since i was only using it hoping my pains would be gone this week. My coaches will hate me if i sit out since i am super slow and its my 1st year and stuff so i need the practice...help?

Should i wear a hat during the afternoon run in the sun ..? and should i wear track pants in the afternoon ??

The symptoms that you mentioned, the pain in the inner calves and your ankles, are not consistent with shin splints. The pain from shin splints occur at the front of the lower legs. Instead, your symptoms are far more consistent with an Achilles tendonitis. The Achilles tendon is the large tendon at the back of the ankle that connects the large calf muscles to the heal bone. It is likely that this tendon is inflamed.

The best way to heal from Achilles tendonitis is to rest and ice the area that is in pain. Applying ice to the area of inflammation can help stimulate blood flow to the area, and relieve the pain associated with inflammation. You should apply ice for no more than 15 minutes at a time for about 2-3 times a day.

As you have experienced, taking Motrin does alleviate your pain. However, long term use can lead to many side effects such as ulcers in your stomach. It is simply best not to use pain medications unless you need it.

After you start feeling better, the best way to avoid Achilles tendonitis is to simply stretch your calf muscles before exercise. Also, it is common in over-pronators, so your shoes may be a factor.

I realize that this is a very important time for you, and I'm sure that it is very tempting to just take some pills and work through the pain. However, I'm sure that your coach will agree with me that it is far better for you to be resting for a few days than the rest of the season from a serious injury.

Good luck on your recovery.

P.S. If repeatedly hitting my foot to the ground causes a calcium buildup that can break off with pressure, I doubt there would be too many marathon runners out there. This sounds a lot like some type of a April Fool's joke.

Track Team?

Try Naproxen Sodium (Aleve)

How do you think women runners differ from men runners in attitude?

This does not sound like shin splints which usually hurt on the front of the lower leg just laterally from the bone. No you will not have calcium build up. Try using some ice after running. Takinig motrin can help and using it for a few days, something less than a month should not hurt you. Don't worry about what the coach thinks, if the pain continues you need to see about it.

TRACK 800m?

alright, first check your shoes to see if the padding has worn off b/c thats the typical problem. take some ibeprofen (Advil) b/c the is a pain reliever but don't go crazy with it, use just enough. stop taking it on the weekends to ease down on the dosage. lastly, ice your shins and knees every night after practice.
p.s. you probably have shin splints which will last for a little while, it should go away if not talk to your doctor

Do you think it would be possible for me to get my mile run down to 5 minutes by fall?

You really ought to see either a sports medicine doctor or an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle. If you could tell me where you live I could direct you to a great doctor in your area. Taking a pain medicine is alright for a few days but doing it continually is only going to mask what might be a bigger problem than you actually think. If you go to the doctor and HE'S the one that tells you to sit out that's totally different from you thinking you need to rest. You need to really listen to your body and not worry so much about what others are going to think or say.

Your pains aren't gone; you haven't figured out what's going on. Time to see a doctor and have a real diagnosis to know where you stand otherwise you won't just be sitting out spring break, you'll be screwing up your entire season!

Take care of yourself!
