Runner's high after a run?

So I took the advice of some on here and I increased my running to 4.0 miles at about a 8.5 - 9 min/mile pace...aided largely by my brand new OTC epinephrine inhaler. I have gone this far before, but not in about a year. I know some argue that there is no runners high (release of endogenous endorphins)... but yesterday, towards the end (when I increased my pace to 8 min mile), but mostly AFTER the run, I experienced about a 10 minute feeling of being on top of the world eurphoria...continuing into my drive home. I felt sort of dissociated also. Do you think this is a "runner's high" effect or do you think that could just happen b/c I was happy with the accomplishment?

The phenomenon of a "runner's high" most certainly exists. I don't know that anyone actually claims that it does not exist, especially with the overwhelming evidence that it does indeed exist. In fact, a wide variety of activities produce this effect.

However, research in the 1980's called into question the hypothesis that endorphin release is the cause of runner's high, as was commonly thought. They found that the runner's high occurred in people, even when the effects from endorphins were blocked.

This called into question the idea that a single neurotransmitter was the cause of runner's high. Since then, a number of other neurotransmitters have all been shown to help to reduce depression, and they also tend to be released and produced in higher concentrations during exercise. That is why these other transmitters are now thought to be the cause of runner's high, although the jury is still out with respect to the exact details of the mechanism.

So, yes, you experienced runner's high, and I am sure you will feel it again and again. It feels great, doesn't it? Mine usually kicks in after about 3-4 miles also, which is probably why I rarely run less than that. :)

I believe it helps to emphasize the good feelings. The endorphins do that. They amplify the "happy "thoughts and feelings.

Good for you.
Runners high is a term used for a state of euphoria experienced during prolonged running or other forms of aerobic, sustained exercise, attributed to an increase of endorphins in the blood. Whenever you have a great run or aerobic workout you feel like you could do anything.
Way to go.
