Is it safe to run with Inguinal hernia?

Answers:

Which choice?

An inguinal ("sports") hernia is an injury where there is sufficient weakening of the abdominal wall to allow a pouch, the hernia, to be felt. It is caused by repetitive twisting and turning at high speed. This type of hernia occurs mainly in people who play ice hockey, soccer, and tennis.

The main symptom is groin pain that may reach into the genital area. Pressure on that area can cause tissue to push through and bulge out. The pain can linger for weeks or months. Sports medicine experts think that the condition results from overuse of groin muscles, which causes stress on the inguinal wall.

Resting the groin muscles for several weeks sometimes can resolve the problem, but in many cases surgery is needed to reinforce the inguinal wall. Competitive athletes may prefer to have surgery right away to resolve the problem. Hernia repair is an out patient procedure.

In the early stages, you could do some light running, but the problem usually becomes progressively worse. I would not recommend any heavy running until the hernia is repaired as this will cause further damage to the abdominal wall and your intestines will protrude further and you could risk having a strangulated hernia where the abdominal wall constricts the portion of the intestine protruding and then you'd have further problems.
