Looking for summer workout for 400 m run?
I ran the 400m run for track last year and did pretty well. I would really like to improve for next season, so I'm looking for a workout I could do over the summer. I already have workouts for football which includes lifting and running, so keep that in mind when answering

Track and Field Spikes? (running)?
practice long distance running, that will help running and football, meditate, and streches will all help both things.I have always been an advocate of building the whole athlete. The weights and running for football are going to help you a lot; there are trade offs:
In his biography "Chasing the Dragon" Michael Johnson says something to the effect that "strength IS speed." True in general terms, but he does not make much of a distinction between different types of strength and speed. As far as I am concerned you can't go too far wrong with a sprints and weights (there are books out there on the subject of "sports speed" if you are interested). One thing to keep in mind is that bulk is good for football, but on the track, it's just baggage. As a sprinter, you can also over do the distance running; a couple of longer runs late in the week are probably enough. Long runs build aerobic endurance, but not "speed endurance," which has to do with the body's ability to tolerate and dispose of lactic acid (that builds up in the muscles in intense effort).
The heart of a 400 runners regime is pace and interval training, but adding that to your football workouts (depending on how intense they are) is as likely to put you at risk for injury as anything. If you can get in some pace work along with weights over the winter, ahead of your competition, that will probably do you the most good when it comes time to step on the track next spring.
