How important is cross training when preparing for a 1/2 marathon?
I have never run a 1/2 marathon before and I usually don't do any cross training. Mainly, I just like to run. How important is it to do some cross training in order to be ready for a 1/2 marathon? Any ideas on what to do for cross training?

Good luck with your race!
If you are just running it for fun, and not to break any records, cross training is not essential. If you train only by running, you will still be able to finish and have a fun time.
It will help you work your muscles in different ways, build endurance, and get a workout that is less stressful on your feet and knees, which is a big plus. I like to swim and bike, because it keeps me from getting bored with just running, and lets me work out on off days.
It's not mandatory. How important? On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = not important, 10 = critical) , I would give it a 3.
Cross training is a nice way to manage your "active rest" days, or just to give your body a day off from the pounding.
I find it is a helpful practice to mix in a few days every month for fun if nothing else. It helps you maintain muscle tone, and promote good conditioning in other parts of your body.
I like to cycle, but you can do literally anything you enjoy. Some people hit an elliptical trainer, some people cycle, swim, while others rock climb. Low impact is probably best.
Cross training is not going to make or break your race. Running is the best thing for your race. Period. Do something you'll enjoy once in a while. If you are going to worry about anything, focus on flexibility.
Does anyone know about free running classes in montreal canada?
Yeah i run 5-10km and i found that sprint training 100m 200m 400m 800m. Has helped wonders. and riding the bike 1 min (turn the knob so you are ridding as hard as it can go) then 2 mins just cycling for half an hour has increased my 5-10km time, takes longer to start fatiguing, and i have a little bit extra in the last stretch. But most times i just enjoy playing footy or basketball for fun. I play full out and it is just something diferent then the long winding roads is a god send. Not sure if this will help with a 1/2 marathon. But it has helped me with my runs. What time is it recommented to run in the morning ..??
I have run lots of Half's and full Marathons and do not cross train. if you want to cross train cycling is good. But you don't need to cross train just make sure you get your speed workouts and long runs in.www.runnersworld.com has lots of great information for training
You need a distance base for the half-marathon, so there is no getting around logging miles on the road. I would supplement training with an activity that moves your body from side-to-side like tennis, racquetball or basketball.
Distance runners get the wear and tear because other muscle groups get weaker because of the lack of side-to-side workouts, especially in the hips. But the roadwork is the serious stuff and the other activity is a fun supplement that will help the body stay totally fit.
