Help with coaching elementary school track team.?

My 11 yr old needs a track coach for his team. I ran track in high school but I don't know much about coaching. I would like to do it, otherwise my kid won't be able to run track, no one else has come forward and time is running out. All the other age groups started training last week, any suggestions?

Who make a record by runing non-stop 72km in marathon race recently?

Since you ran in HS, you know that a good coach pushes the runners harder than they think they want to go. Do a tiny bit of that, but a lot less, with your elementary kids. Most of elementary track is just getting the kids in shape and making sure they have fun; if you make times and performance too important you may discourage them. Run some time trials at the beginning of the year, let them run whatever events they'd like (they'll learn what they're better at over time, you can't force it at this age) and then base everything on improvement rather than meet scoring. Teach the skills. They'll improve.

Interval workouts sort of fall on deaf ears with kids this age, but do one a week anyway, just so they get the idea of them. Nothing difficult.

How should I...?

join and tell them to run reeeeeaaaaaalllllyyy fast!!

Does anybody know where I can find a training schedule for running a half marathon?

Girl..lemme tell you what to do..become that coach and you work those kids off..coz if you don't come up and next thing you know someone who isn't even good at it is put in charge, those kids will not be able to use their time wisely or achieve something great...and plus you get to work them hard like labrats in a wheel...*evil laugh*...

Best running shoe for supination?

When you are working with children at this level of ability and experience the most important thing is to make sure they have fun. You can instill in them the desire to run, or you can make running a pain and guarantee that they will never run again. Let them try the events they wish to do. You can sort out what they can do, but sometimes people do not find their event until they are out of college. Running some time trials you should be able to see whether they should be in sprints or distance. Trials will determine who can throw and jump. They should be encouraged to do what they wish to do, and have some ability. However, at this age you really don't have a good indication on what they will be doing after puberty. Just make the work outs fun so they will not walk off tired and discouraged.

What should I do with my varsity letter?

I did the same thing for my kid's XC team a few years ago...and love it. See the link below for some tips on kid's running. In short, I would keep it simple & fun for the kids that are 8 & under (if you have them). For the others try to arrange the practices where there's some structure and fun mixed in around preparing for their event. For XC...Mondays were fun days...Wednesdays were hills and sprints.Fridays were long and easy (Sundays were meets). I would also try to get a few parents to help out with practices...I had a few helpers that liked to jog with the kids which worked out nicely. Best of luck...you'll get a lot of it...and they'll remember you for it.
