Runners: I need some help?
Question:I played indoor/outdoor soccer, basketball in high school and would probably run close to 3 miles a day then. I've been out of high school for a few years now and am pretty out of shape. I'm wanting to start running again. I obviously don't want to just go out and start running and kill over or anything haha.
A friend suggested running/walking in intervals until I work my way back up.
I'm wondering if anyone has a good beginner's program I can follow or has some good advice for me? Do you think the interval suggestion is good? Any advice would be great.

Can you hold your breath while running track?
Try the 10-week plan below. It sttarts off by introducing running in a run / walk mix (as your friend suggested). It's best to ease into it...it's safer & more enjoyable. After 10 weeks you'll be able to run 3 miles without stopping...then you can sign up for some local 5k races or whatever your goal might be. Best of luck!- Mike
How does the distance measurement device (Polar S725X) works?
The best advice I can give you is to start running soon. Start out slow and short distances. And FYI running won't kill you... you'll pass out first. ha. I love that. Good Luck! The running until you need to walk and then walking until you can run is a good way to start. Depending on how many years you have been out will determine how long it takes you to get back. Doing 2-3 miles, 2-3 times a week for the first few weeks should be easy of you. Just get started. I think you need to remember that you will feel like running too far too soon, and that can lead to injury. You should maintain your program and not increase the mileage for the first 3-4 weeks. Then up it about 25%, every 3-4 weeks. Never run more than 5-6 days a week.
What's the longest you could run on a treadmill at one time?
Many runners try too hard too early, At least half of adults who start a running program fail. Most people who give running a chance love it, I have been running for nearly 10 years now, starting in a situation similar to yours. There are a few things to do before you start 1) Make a Commitment (Join a running club) 2) Make sure you are healthy enough to runWhat I recommend is to start with an easy 30 minute walk, then a 30 min brisk walk and then add some slow jogging breaks into that 30 minutes. Once you are able to do that, try this: Do a 5-10min walking warm up, start jogging until you feel like its enough, then walk briskly for the amount of time you ran or until you have your breath back. Be sure to run easy at first. Follow this routine continuously for 20 minutes. Each time, try to take less walk breaks. And your goal should be to run the 20 minutes without a break at a conversational pace. Be sure to measure time not distance
Don't run too hard at first and have fun, take an ipod with you or run with a friend
Do you have any rituals, or habits you do before you run?
Your friend is right start with that and then worry about a running program. walk run intervals on the track. Run a lap walk a lap.Help on improving running distance?
I would ask a sports trainer. There is one at this site who ran track in college and could answer your question.I would ask them since they work with athletes everyday.Good luck.http://athletictraining.forumsfourfree.c...
Jeff Galloway advocates run/walk training and it worked for me when I trained for a marathon last year. Just go to the following link and following his training advice. Good luck! Remember to stretch before you work out.
