Should I join Cross Country next year?

Make sure you get plenty of rest and water in between races. Isn't the open 800 usually in the middle of the meet and the mile second to last? Use that time to rest and get your energy back. If you really push yourself in both races, you should barely be able to walk after the meet. Good luck.

What should long distance runners - 25 kms - consume during the event in terms of carbohydrates and fluids?

800m -- start out fast. about the same start for the 400.
then after about the 150 mark. get into a good pace.
just keep movin your arms & legs fast.
when you get to the 300 mark, go a little faster.
just a little. now when you have done your first 400,
& you are about to start your next one
you have to go faster.
about the speed of a 400 meter start.
now when you get your 500 mark,
get into that same pace.
fast arms and legs, going forward.
when you get to the 600 mark,
start to excelerate & by the
time that you are at the last 100
you should be going full speed.

mile -- the first lap should be fast.
try & get a good start, but not a fast one.
you want to go about 5-10 secs. slower than your 400 time
(ex. 63sec. = 69 sec.)
the second lap you should still be moving fast
& not quite a long stride yet.
the time should be about 10-15 sec.
slower than your first lap
(ex. 69 + 13 = 82sec. for second lap
& total 2:31)
now your third lap will be the hardest part.
just keep moving fast at the speed
of about your second lap in an 800m.
last lap to go.
in the begining of the lap start to go faster.
but at a good pace.
when you hit that 150 mark, start to go faster,
but good pace & long stride, fast legs & arms.
last 100 try to be aggresive with the arms.
your almost done.

tips -- try to make sure you have good form.
it helps alot. just move your arms fast
& at a good pace

Is this a good time to run a mile for a 7th grade girl in her first week of track??

Im going to respectfully disagree with Kristen. She has horrible advice.

For the 800m, your 2nd lap should be 2-3 seconds faster then your first.

For the mile, keep a steady but fast pace,DON'T GET SLOWER ON YOUR SECOND LAP, KEEP A TIME OF THE SAME PACE...you will be dieing out there if you start out too fast. let it all out dont hold anything back or youll regret it,

I want to do cross country in High School?

I suggest that you go through a complete warm up AND cool down for BOTH races. I disagree with both of the above. Your first lap should be your fastest in an 800 because it is easier to run a better time when doing so. The first 400 should idealy be about 5-6 seconds off of your best 400 time. And try to come back with a strong finish.

The 1600 wasn't my best event but I always tried to take a strong (not fast) pace out the first 800 and just try to hold on to that pace.

Get plenty of rest and eat lightly before your race. Good luck!

Good running shoes for the overpronator?

stretch ALOT before the race. Drink plenty of water and during the race go hard the first lap and at the second lap push through all pains and go all out. You will feel so much better knowing you ran your heart out :) You should try for under 2:10 or so.

Your favorite post-run snack?

Haha so you're going for a double in the 800 and mile...Okay, despite your mediocre advice from your colleagues above I have to say that unless you jog your first lap of your 800, your not going to negative split (run a faster 2nd lap than the first lap). Also, don't count on running your first and second lap the same, you're going to feel like you are going the same speed, but you're going to come stumbling across that line 5 seconds slower than your first lap. It seems as if you are running sub 2:10 so your first lap should be a 59-60 flat. Don't panic, its not too fast, just remember you only have one lap to go. Now the key is to slingshot off the line after the first lap, this will shave off some seconds overall. You will be feeling tired, but not too tired at this point. No negative thoughts should come into your head and dig deep, you only have 300 meters left to go. Make sure you open up with about 250-200 left. Under no circumstances should the though of running a 1600 after the 800 come into your head, you will finish the race pretty tired (hopefully) but you will be surprised at how fast your body recovers! When you open up your stride (200 left) focus on your form, lift your knees and arms and they will carry you to the finish. And thats the 800.

Mile-wise you have some pretty good advice already so I think your pretty set to do well in this meet. When running one event, do not, under any circumstances, think about having to run the other one you'll be fine (I usually have to run three or four events a meet such as a 4 x 800, open 1600, open 800, and either 4 x 400, or 1200 in the DMR.) Good Luck!

Affects of Cross-training on distance running?

Go out hard, pick it up in the middle, kick with 200 to go.

If you overthink and strategize you'll be screwed, if you go out like an idiot you'll die, it's up to you to find the middle ground.

good luck

7:30 per mile good for 13 year old?

Drink plenty of fluids tonight and during the day before the meets starts. In both events get a fast start, sit in your pace after the first 150 meters and then sprint like crazy for the last 100m. Run as hard as you can in both races.
