I want to run a 10K?

Can I have any ideas on where to begin? Currently, I run 3 miles 3 days/week. The farthest I have ever gone is 4.5mi (last year). I want to run by July-August maybe. Is this possible?

Running my first marathon. What happens when i place in the top 50?

I run 10k races every once in awhile. I don't know how good of shape you are in but running 3miles/3 days a week is a very good start! Start with your 3 miles and work your way up to 4 then when you feel comfortable with that go to 5 then 6. A 10k is only 6.2 miles, so once you do that you should be set to go! Good Luck!

What are the best running shoes?

This is very possible. At the moment you are running 5 kilometers three days a week. I think to begin you should try and see If you can make 10kms\6miles. I started off about 6 months ago doing 6k runs and within 3 months I had moved up to 10k. With that time line you should be able to make it easily. I found that the biggest hurdle when moving up to 10k was a mental and not physical one.
Try run 10k and see how you go. If you cant make 10k begin gradually increasing the distance you run each week by half a mile or so. Also begin pushing a lot harder in the last half mile. This will help to improve your physical and mental stamina.

Does anyone know of a automatic timing device you can buy for a 40 yard dash, or 100??

Pain in knee from running?

a 10K is just a little more than 6 miles, so thats well within your reach.

3 miles 3 days a week is a great start, keep that up. add a longer run one day a week, on Saturday or Sunday. Start this at 4 miles, and slowly increase it to 6 miles. you'll be up to 6 miles in no time, and ready for that 10K.

How do I perform a Chris Carmichael field test for determining my heart rate zones?"?

Its more than possible--it will happen. Just increase your total weekly mileage and your long runs a little bit each week and you'll be there well before July. I started running last May just to try and lose some weight. I had trouble even running 3 miles without cramps, etc. but I stuck with it and fell in love with running. Not only did I lose weight (about 30 pounds) but I've run all kinds of races over the past year from 5Ks to half marathons and I'm training to run my first marathon next month.

How do one prepare oneself to run a marathon. If one is used to run only 3 miles every other day?.?

It sounds like you have a good base of mileage to start training. See the plan below which gradualy increases your mileage and speedwork. Best of luck!
