I just recently took up jogging. I am finding the top of my foot and ankle are so tender. Is it my shoes?
I wear Nike Cross Trainers. I find I have tenderness on the top left foot and a shooting pain in my ankle. I do not want to give it up but it does stop me. I am now only running three times a week and riding my bike twice.

It could beyou might not be getting enough support in your shoes for your ankles, and you are probably tieing the laces too tight
Wear a half size larger than normal shoe-sneaker and two-three pair of socks. And, afterwards when you shower, use a good antiseptic soap to prevent infection from any bruises during the jogging.

Cross trainer shoes are typically pretty versatile, and they can be okay for running as long as you're not putting on heavy mileage. However, it does sound like you started running a little too much too quickly. The pain in the top left foot and the shooting pain in the ankle are classic symptoms of a very mild case of plantar fasciitis. The treatment is pretty simple. Try to keep weight off your foot until the tenderness goes away. You can also apply ice to the sore area for no more than 15 minutes at a time for three or four times a day.
To avoid injury in the future, you should try some stretches before you run. I have enclosed a link to some basic ones below.
Finally, if you decide to start adding a lot of miles to your runs, you should at least think about getting some running shoes, especially if your pain persists even with these stretches.
Good luck.

do you run on concrete? concrete putspressure on your feet normally it affects your knees, butif you are a beginner it will affect your ankles. run on grass and dirt for a couple of weeks if it doens't improve loosen the knots of your sneakers. i run track and wear the same sneakers and this improved my running and got rid or the tenderness and pain.Any mid-distance running advice?
The first thing I would recommend is finding a local running shop and having them fit you for shoes. Any good shop will do a brief gait analysis and give you a series of shoes that would work best for you.As for the current injury, try to ice and apply a topical painkiller. Something like Advil would do the trick if the topical stuff isn't available.
If the pain gets to the point where running is impossible, you will know. Everyone will tell you to just stay off it, but sometimes these injuries can be run through. Only you can be the judge of that. But if it's affecting your gait and is unbearable, get off it completely. No in-betweens.
Hope things work out. Cheers
