I am having trouble trying to stay at an even pace?

I am training for a 1/2 marathon and therefore running slower longer runs. I am used to doing faster shorter runs. I tend to run too fast and burn out. How can I get my pace under control. Is there any such thing as electronic pace setters? Any other ideas?

Look for a GPS running watch, many of the GPS devices have a pace setting feature also. They will measure your distance, pace, and speed, and you can set them to beep if you go faster or slower than a certain pace.

I use the Timex Speed+Distance system, you can find it on Amazon for under $100. They also make more expensive models that have a heart rate monitor, and you can have those give an alarm if your heart rate is too fast.

If you feel yourself speeding up slow yourself down! You can tell when you start to go faster because your breathing changes and your heart rate will go up. Either use a heart monitor to keep your rate steady and lower or pay more attention to your breathing. Try running ridiculously slow but with music so you don't get bored. You'll take longer but you won't burn out! Listen to calm music and let your mind wander rather than hard music that makes you want to run fast. Best of luck!
