What is the best wood for a pool table? Walnut? Cherry? Pecan? Any suggestions on buying a pool table?
And I am only looking to pay a couple thousand dollars, not twenty thousand dollars...

The wood really doesn't make a difference whatever you think looks best to you. You just want to make sure if you are buying one, that you get a one inch slate that is all one piece, the only time you would want a 2 piece slate is if you buy a large table like an 8 foot table. Then you're more than likely gonna have to go with a 2pc slate. If your serious about pool though don't get one that is not a 1in. slate under that felt. The wood is up to you as well as the design. Whether it be classic ,antique,or contemporary. The thickness of the slate is what matters . No less then a 1/2 in' . 1 in' thick is better. Pool tables come in 2 different sizes,one will be what is called "regulation" and it will measure exactly 4' wide and 8' long rail to rail. The other size is what is is usually in bars and it measures 7'4" long and 3'8" wide. If ya play on a regulation table at home and go to a bar and play on the smaller size,you will do great. But going from the slightly smaller table to a regulation table your bank shots and combos will be off. I recommend the "Regulation" table for the homeWho is your favorite snooker player and why? All great choices its all eye of the beholder from there .I would have to have walnut Any would be a welcome addition .Dont know about price range 2 K in a real quality table is a little on the low side ,while your shopping take a look at Maple and oak.Really any hardwood You know light dark your choice it will be the center of attention build the room around it .Nobody buys a table to match the drapes kind of thingWith me its a major purchase i spent more time deciding on a table than i did my house or car,well maybe my motorcycle i built it, but which ever enjoy i dont feel like i answerd your question but thats my opinion anyway

If you only want to pay a few grand you'll have to stay away from the fancy woods and go with a synthetic composite construction like mylar.
It's highly durable and still looks good.
Why does the pool table has only 6 pockets?
1) A hardwood is best for durability.2) Why not look for a used pool table in your area?
3) A pool table made of mylar would be pretty useless. Mylar is a thin film; it is not a structural material.
