I'm thinking of purchasing a pool cue - should I get a viking or a predator? Is it just personal preference?

If you have a chance, you should try some cues to find out what you like. Whatever feels right is probably the best choice for you. Predator and other "low deflection" shafts do take some getting used to. Some will adjust more quickly than others, and some people can't seem to get used to them at all. I personally prefer the consistent hit they produce. If you have a cue that you like and are comfortable with, just make sure the tip is well maintained and you should be good to go. I would suggest a Sniper or Moori tip again for the consistent results, and since they last longer and wear more evenly.
Quality cues and tips cost more, but if you are at all serious about the game, quality pays. You will have many years of enjoyment or grief based on your decision. Go with what you know is good quality, and you will be glad you did.
Good luck and have fun with your new cue, whatever you decide.
