definition of sport is : an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.so even though people think of sports as mostly contact except for like golf and tennis, according to that pool is a sport.
but i think i agree with that other guy about how its more like a game and kinda like a puzzle for the mind. and it doesnt necessarily take strength like golf might to hit a ball so many yards. But i have to say i like watching pool and love playing it cause it does take some mad skill and lots of concentration.
Think of this way... YES! Okay, there's more. Some think horse racing is a sport. Some think Golf is a sport. Bowling, Volleyball, ping pong, etc. In Pool there are team tournaments. Does that qualify as a sport? If "sport" is defined as something that requires "team" play, then yes.
In tennis there are "singles" and "doubles" events. Would the doubles qualify as a sport and not the singles?
In the final analysis all are "Games". Whether "singles", "doubles" or "9" as in a baseball team.
Personal opinion is yes, pool is as much a sport as any other game that requires skill, talent and dedication.

This question has been asked a few times before and every now and then it bears repeating. One of the other answers gave a definition of what constitutes a sport and by that criteria, it is a sport. Pool may not always have the physical demands that some associate with more mainstream sports, but the physical skill and dexterity of pool cannot be understated. Now I do have to draw the line at poker. Stephen Hawking could play poker if he wanted to and he could probably do very well.
