What is the maximum break in snooker?

my mate says its 147 but i say its 155.if a player misses the balls when he breaks, then its a free ball to his opponent as he cannot see two sides of any red.now the opponent gets to pot a colour as a red and then a colour.say he pots the black as his colour and then goes on to get all the rest of the balls.this means his break is 155 so why does everybody always say the 147 is the maximum.

It doesn't count as a break if the first play missed his ball.

When they talk about the Highest Break they are refering to the the highest snooker break possible without the benefit of an opponent's foul. This is 147.

It is possible to have a 155 break, but the fouls mean this isn't counted.

At least 3 breaks over 155 in proffessional snooker have occoured. A break of 149 is listed as the highest in the Guiness Book of World Records.

You are both right.147 is called the maximum because if 155 was called the maximum nobody would ever get it. But technically you can get a 155. I don't know if its ever been done though.

Jamie Burnett made the highest ever break in the history of professional snooker. In the second qualifying round of the Travis Perkins UK Championship at Prestatyn, his opponent, Leo Fernandez, fouled before any reds had been potted and gave away a "free" ball. Burnett then potted the brown as the "extra" red, brown again, then the 15 reds, 12 blacks, two pinks, a blue and all the colours to clear the table
with a break of 148. That was in 2004.

I don't know how number 8 suggests 3 breaks over 155 have been made!! Confusing break with final score maybe.

If no balls down and snookered on all reds. Player has a free ball. example, they take any other available ball as free ball (1 point) then black, (7 points). They then continue to pot all other balls in sequence (147). break is therefore 147 + 8 = 155
