I'm sure that somebody is going to cut and paste the whole "snooker" entry from wikipedia, but I'll give you the basics from the point of view of an American pool player. Snooker is a game that is similar to pocket billiards (pool) with a few main differences. The tables are very large. The standard size snooker table is 6' X 12', although they do make 5' X 10' snooker tables as well. The balls are smaller than pool balls, 2 1/16" and 2 1/4" respectively. The pocket openings are much smaller on snooker tables and they are rounded, unlike pool table pockets which have sharp corners. These rounded openings makes running a ball along the rail extremely difficult. The ball will almost always rattle in the pocket and bounce out unless you hit it clean in. The pocketing skill required for snooker is very great, due to both the long distances of the shots and the smaller, rounded pockets. Pool players with a snooker background, such as Alison Fisher, are often very skilled shotmakers. Unlike pool balls, which are stripes and solids with numbers on them, snooker balls are all solid colors with no markings on them. I'm not going to get into great detail about the rules, but in a nutshell, you have "reds" and "colors" The reds are worth one point and the other colored balls have corresponding point values. What basically happens is that the player alternates pocketing reds and colors until they miss. Like, straight pool, snooker is a point based game. You can find more detailed rule listings online.
