You need to allow space for when you play. The full length of your pool (cue)stick in any position around the table.

we have a pool table in our basement. put the tip of the cue against the side of the table, add at least one foot. 18 inches is better. and don't forget about the ceiling. ppl have a tendency to pull up the sticks fast and high. false ceilings will get beat up pretty bad, but at least they won't hurt the cues. are u going to have an over the table light?
