Absolutely not. There are many ways to improve at pool, but the best route that I can recommend is formal instruction. You would be an ideal student for a certified instructor. You have a desire to improve and a love for the game. Plus, you don't have years of bad habits to work against. When you consider the amount of time you'll be saving, an instructor is a huge bargain. If there is such a thing as a shortcut to improvement, this is it. A lot of people are going to give you extremely general advice like "just practice a lot" or "try to watch and copy better players". If you don't know what to practice, then you aren't being very efficient. Practice by itself does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. 15 minutes of quality practice will do more for your game than 5 hours of trial and error. Trying to emulate other players can be a dangerous route. Since each player is unique, we all have to find out what works best for us. The local house champion has found out what works well for him/her. That doesn't mean that it will work for you. I have students from 5 feet tall to 6' 8" and you can bet that they don't play the same way. There are some good books out there on pool, but I truly believe that they should be used as a supplement to formal instruction, not a substitute. A good instructor will provide you with the tools to discover your own game. I will give you a link to the BCA (Billiard Congress of America) website. Since your a beginner you should play pool as much as you can whatever chance you get. It is true that practice makes perfect. Another thing to do is watch people who are better than you. You can learn a lot by watching others play. Im an experienced player but am still amazed when watching other skilled players play. Get a book or research online the basics of pool. This will explain to you the rules, english, ball positioning etc. Dont waste your money on paying someone to teach you something you can learn yourself. Also get a cheap decent cue. Play, play, play. The more shots you try, the better you'll be. So much of it is getting a feel for the table and being able to see shots. I've been playing a long time, but there are still some bank shots that I don't feel comfortable with.Also, try to become friendly with a good player or two. They can help you with your game.
I found playing 9 ball a great way to improve my game. Because you must hit the lowest ball on the table first, 9 ball forces you to take shots you would never consider taking in 8 ball, improving your overall game.
