Applying any type of spin on the cue ball is called english. In this case, you're interested in peforming what is known as 'draw'.In order to apply any sort of spin and accuracy, you need to make certain the following conditions are met: the tip of your cue should have the same curvature as a quarter- that is, hold a quarter up to the side of your cue's tip and check that the "roundness" is approximately the same.
Next, you should apply a fair amount of chalk, as this is what causes the friction between the ball and your stick.
Now imagine a point dead center of the cue ball, and that point is exactly the size of your cue- tip. The spot you want to aim for is one cue-tip below the center. Hold your stick parallel with the table- don't raise the butt end up as this will cause a jump shot.
Draw your stick back smoothly, and stroke smoothly forward. You don't actually need a lot of force- you need to make certain you follow throuh your shot- that is, your cue should end up in a spot 3-4 inches past the starting point of the cue ball.

further to above, you need to put a fair amount of power behind the shot too or else you risk playing a stop shot. You can get practice balls with lines and dots on to get used to the part of the cueball you are aiming atPut backspin on it. In pool it is known as english. To do this, take your normal stroke but hit on the bottem of the cue ball. to practice not going too low, hit a striped ball with the stripe going horizontally. Hit the ball where the stripe ends on the bottem.
