Do not know the answer to this question...but thanks for using the term "Granny"..an old school term that some of the young guns always look at me weird when I use it.glad to see that someone out there still uses it..good luck on the question..I am like Johnny, not much control...always remember a tip someone gave me.."stay behind the 50 yard line(side pocket) with the cue ball"....although a little longer, it avoids using the bridge when it gets on the other side of the side pocket..good luck with your question!

I can't find who invented it or when, but I did find a reference to the "rest", as it was called back then, in the early 1800's.
