Nick Varnerwent to college at Purdue University. He was a collegiate champion in 1969 and 1970.

I cannot find any record of Earl Strickland going to college. He started playing pool aged nine and after serious practice, he entered his first pro tournament aged 15. Five years later he turned professional. It seems as though he focussed his energy on pool.
