you get what you pay for regardless what you buy, but here's something to think about. When you buy it from a retailer you have to pay a little more because their cost has built-in things like rent-lights-payroll and other things that have to be paid to stay in business. But if you buy it from a reputable company you would get a warranty, probably set up and delivery which could be a real problem trying to get your buddies to help getting it in the house without dammaging it.You need to ask yourself if you're going to play it all the time, will you be moving at some point, what are you going to do with it later and crap like that. Slate is the normal bed for the top because it is stone and it does not warp like wood or other surfaces do, but slate is not the only thing to watch for, the bumpers, the pockets, the mechanism, etc..
If you want to be cheap go find someone that sells them in your area, there are lots and they may have some trade in ones to suit your needs and price.
Is the much difference between a 7ft table and a 8ft table?
